Taking Care of Handcrafted Jewelry
Most beads of fine quality, like those used in designer jewelry, have very small holes and require the use of light wire for stringing, making them very delicate. Please handle your jewelry carefully and keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat. Never apply hairspray, lotions or perfume while wearing jewelry.
Silver tarnishes, a process caused by oxidation. To prevent excess tarnish, polish regularly by gently rubbing with a soft polishing cloth, meant for this purpose. Never dip your items in any type of jewelry or metal cleaner as it will harm pearls and many types of stones. Cleaners also remove the intentional oxidation that we somtimes use in our findings.
Store items flat to prevent the beading wire from bending, preferably in a cloth bag or box with tarnish-inhibiting strips. Vermeil items should be stored in plastic ziplock bags.
Gold-filled products are 14K gold that has been bonded to metal, giving it more strength and making it more resistant to dents than solid 14K gold. This is not the same as gold-plating which is a thin sprayed-on layer of gold that eventually wears off. While more expensive than gold plate, gold-filled is much less expensive than solid 14K gold but will scratch like 14K gold if excessively rubbed. 14kt gold fill jewelry can be cleaned when it tarnishes with any non-toxic liquid jewelry cleaner. Goldfilled jewelry keeps its look if you care for it consistently. It can be carefully polished by a professional jeweler as well. Storing in plastic bags with anti-tarnish stips is a great way to protect your pieces.
